The Lookout, near Jacksonville, Texas, 1974
I took many photographs in East Texas in the early and mid-1970s, but more were in black and white and I often had little time to spend looking for pictures. I only had a small Pentax camera in the years 1971-73 and it was always loaded with Tri-X. In 1974, however, I also took a Rollieflex loaded with color and managed to take a few pictures in between attending to family affairs. I also spent a morning at The Lookout north of Jacksonville and since I already had a bunch of black and white photographs of this unique spot, I thought I should do it in color and I’m glad I did. The single photograph of Winona’s row of storefronts along Highway 155 was just a grab on my way through town to Fort Bliss, Texas in June 1963. It is included simply because it is the first color photograph I took in this wonderful little town.
