Community Gardens

In the 1980s, as buildings on were demolished, energetic residents of the Lower East Side took it upon themselves to transform ugly, littered lots into verdant community gardens. Now, twenty or more years later, the gardens are wonderful patches of green that serve many purposes other than a moment of simple tranquility and rest for a weary photographer after having walked a hundred blocks.
