Gay Parade 1983

I took my last photographs of the parade in 1983. The parade had become increasingly commercial over the years and to me it seemed too choreographed and structured. Instead of forming downtown and working its way north, the parade now formed uptown on Central Park West and came down Fifth Avenue. I thought this was far less interesting and when the event became more established and successful, I lost interest. There was still a long way to go to achieve gay equality, and the parade had played its part and continues to do so, but I moved on to other projects. And, of course, I was discouraged that everyone rejected the photographs as unpublishable.
